Location: Outside Seddul-Bahr village off the Krithia Road, probably north-east of the village cemetery (cypresses).

Location: At entrance to Seddul-Bahr village from Krithia Road.

Location: Morto Bay, at the foot of Eski Hissarlik.

Location: 300 metres north of Morto Bay, atop falaise des oliviers.

Location: Eastern slope of Suleiman Reis Dere.

About this inventory
Overview
This inventory documents sites of French military commemoration (cemeteries, ossuaries and monuments) established on the Gallipoli Peninsula and neighbouring islands between 1915 and 1930, as well as commemorative tablets now preserved within the Mur de Souvenir at the French military cemetery.
The sites span three distinct periods:
- Wartime (1915-1916): Battlefield cemeteries and burial grounds established during the campaign
- Occupation period (1918-1922): Formal cemeteries, ossuaries, and monuments created by French forces
- Consolidation era (1923-1930): The concentration of graves and memorials into the single necropolis at Seddul-Bahr
Sources & methodology
The inventory is derived from multiple historical sources:
- Şevki Paşa maps (1916): Ottoman topographic survey showing wartime burial grounds
- Lieutenant Colonel Lardant's map (1919): "Plan d'ensemble d'aménagement des Cimetières, Ossuaires & Monuments"
- Pierre Roger Le Baron photographs (1919): French military documentation of cemetery sites
- L'Illustration magazine (1921, 1927, 1930): Contemporary coverage of commemoration activities
- Field research: On-site investigation and GPS coordinates by project team members
Understanding the commemorative tablets
When France consolidated its extensive commemoration into a single cemetery, plaques from now-abandoned cemeteries and monuments were preserved in the Mur de Souvenir (Wall of Remembrance). These 22 tablets fall into two categories:
- Preservation tablets: Inscriptions saved from demolished memorials across the French sector
- Original tablets: Created specifically for the Mur de Souvenir
Each tablet in this inventory includes its full inscription and, where known, identifies its origin memorial.
Data quality & limitations
⚠️ Important: This is a working inventory with ongoing research. Some information remains uncertain or approximate.
Known limitations include:
- Coordinate accuracy: Some locations are approximate, particularly for sites that no longer exist
- Date ranges: Establishment and closure dates may be uncertain for some sites
- Name variations: French and Turkish place names may have multiple spellings
- Missing information: Some memorial details await discovery in French military archives
